The Committee on Life Insurance Research, along with the Product Development Section, the Financial Reporting Section, and the Reinsurance Section, are pleased to make the following report available. Authored by Marianne Purushotham, Emil Valdez, and Huijing Wu of Towers Watson, this report examines historical rates of improvement for both the general population and the insured population from a global perspective. Included in the report is also a detailed discussion of current techniques for projecting future mortality and mortality improvement experience. Key considerations such as medical advances, socioeconomic status, lifestyle decisions and others for developing a view of future mortality improvement and its relationship to the past are also covered.
